Project Manifesto

Luna Nera and Factory Berlin are art groups that have been working with site specific and site responsive concepts since 1997, in London, Berlin , Barcelona and have exhibited in many other cities in and outside of Europe.
In their works the artists and guest artists of the groups are concentrating on awakening interest in environmental and architectural heritage of different localities.
By challenging the visitor in looking through the eyes of the artists at the particular location, the artists deal with themes such as society, community, history and memories of public places.
The artists make it their main aim , to revitalise and reappropriate disused, abandoned and forgotten places within the urban environment through artistical means.
Their works are produced in situ with direct influence of all aspects of the given location. Aspects such as , history, memory and textures are used as the basic building blocks for the artworks. Luna Nera and Factory Berlin aim to build connections between the theoretical and practical approach towards site specific and site responsive art works, through a series of projects which include text , symposium, workshops and exhibition.

Coldstore

is an international art project which invited artists of the groups Luna Nera and Factory Berlin and several guest artists from germany and abroad , which will take place in the “Kühlhaus am Gleisdreieck” in Luckenwalderstr in Berlin Kreuzberg. All artists are concered with the use of unused buildings and localities within the urban environment, and are using these places as sources of inspiration and creation , by working with and around the space. Through their work the artist are seeking to revitalise the abandond urban deserts.
The artists are exploring these spaces by means of new technologies in close combination with traditional art practises. By referring and responding directly to the available space, the visitor is given the opportunity to see their immediate surrounding through the eyes of the artist.
The exhibition “Coldstore” will be a 3 day exhibition of visual , acoustic and performative art.

The works will reflect the real surrounding space while interacting with the virtual space.
To animate and visualise the building, some artists specialising in the field of outdoor projections will concentate on using the walls of the building as a projection screen for their largescale projections illuminating the facades of the coldstore.

'Based on the constant decay, the building is in a state of metamorphosis, and while at the same time it impresses most bypassers with it’s monumental facade, the impression is not sustained, it fades away and turns into a hole in the cities face.
It speaks of possibilities and fantasies yet at the same time it represents deterioration.
Similar to each line of an aging face which each tell the history of the individuals life, the broken facades reflect the lives of the building they adorn. Broken windows are looking at the lively streets while lively streets are looking through broken glass into the hollowness of a bygone era.
These houses function as metaphors for the inaccessible recesses of a citys' history.
Within this psychological roadmap of a town these buildings disrupt the flow of time. They fulfil the function of a memorial. They breath in without breathing out, speaking of a forgotten time and are representing a state of inertness while waiting for new life to be reinstalled. In this state these buildings absorb the cities energy.
Most of these old buildings inherit an immense potential but all too often they have to make way and are demolished out of economic reasons.
For the expansion and organic growth of a city , we as artist perceive the detection, the restoration, the conservation and maintenance as an important conduct.
Finding and exploring these spaces is one of the aims of the artists of the groups Luna Nera and Factory Berlin, to explore the hidden inner worlds and project them to the outside to then return them reanimated.
By reanimation and visualisation within the urban space we seek to inspire a creative dialogue, and find synergies of art forms and ways of living and for the localities to regain their strength and meaning in their environments through ways of exploration and experimentation in visual acoustic and performative ways which are derived from the subject/object in question.'
